Job Title/Reporting to

Software Engineer with one of the following grade levels:
  • Graduate Software Engineer

  • Distinguished Software Engineer
  • All Software Engineers report to Software Team Leads.
  • All Software Team Leads report to the Product Engineering Manager.
 

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to utilize the relevant development languages and technologies to design, develop, and maintain software applications. The Software Engineer engages in identifying, designing, installing, and testing software systems they have built from the ground up. It can range from creating internal systems that can help businesses be more efficient to producing systems that can be sold on the open market. Once software developers have delivered the initial software system, they will also help in maintaining, and updating the system. Just as important as the technical proficiencies are the software design patters, common application frameworks, and testing abilities that make up a fully developed and well-rounded Software Engineer
 

Knowledge:

  • Excellent knowledge of the latest required development languages and development technologies.
            ○ Examples of required front-end languages and technologies - Angular, MVC, C#, ASP, AJAX, JavaScript, Typescript, and SQL Server (developing and shipping application code).             ○ Examples of required back-end languages and technologies - Microsoft .NET application development platform, C#, MVC, WCF, and some Angular and JavaScript.             ○ Examples of ML Engineering languages and technologies – Python, Tensorflow or PyTorch, Apache Kafka, Apache Beam, Mongo, SQL or Hadoop, Docker, Kubernetes or Apache Airflow.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Azure / AWS.
  • Good working knowledge of Agile development practises
  • Good working knowledge of Docker containers and Kubernetes.
  • Good working knowledge of microservice architecture.
  • Good working knowledge of MongoDB.
  Professional Experience:
  • 8+ years Software development experience in relevant development languages and technologies.
  • Extensive coding experience.
  Educational Background:
  • BSc IT degree in Computer Science - 3 years or more (or equivalent).
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer certification (preferred).
  • Post graduate degree or similar (preferred).
 
Expertise:
  • Initiate research and recommend technologies, tools, methods, and processes to increase effectiveness and delivery pace/quality.
  • Understanding of the technology relevant to the capability.
  • Detailed business analysis of requirements and needs.
  • Co-ordination with other teams to deliver and implement enhanced capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret architecture principles into designed and deployable / usable solutions.
  • Identify operational risks within the capability area.
  • Close co-ordination with Architecture to ensure that designs, standards, and quality can be implemented within their function.
  • Recognised expert in several key technologies and has expert level of understanding of technology relevant to the capability. Has experience of implementing complex technical solutions in a variety of diverse situations.
  • Identify and mitigate operational risks within the capability area.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead discussions and takes appropriate actions to overcome any potential barriers.
  • Take accountability for developing and cross-skilling across multiple disciplines within own area to expand capability and versatility of the team.
  • Experienced architectural skills. Capable of creating innovative new architectural solutions and taking the technical lead with teams to implement.
  • In depth technical knowledge of application functionality and architecture.
  • Recognised for expertise depth that sets a standard across IoT.nxt and other external benchmarks.
  • Expert understanding of the commercial processes relevant to the capability.
  • Champion /evangelist for best practices and adoption of new/emerging technologies across the department, ensuring the right tools and technologies are used, and cost of change is minimised.
  • Is considered a key expert and influencer - not only to Expert Engineers/Architects across multiple regions within IoT.nxt but is also a public face of IoT.nxt. Evangelises the use of technology, an MVP professional, potentially published and has broad experience outside of their immediate domain.
  • Has a good understanding of the broader IoT.nxt business, the importance of global technology relevance/trends and awareness of appropriate technologies that would suit our varying customer bases.

Delivery Capability:

  • Understand and adhere to a common way of working across the Product Engineering team.

  • Ensuring that all source code checked into source control system is compiling and properly tested.
  • Adherence to the principle of longevity of all software that will be deployed or incorporated into systems that are provided by the company.
  • Proper and regular backups of all documentation (internal and external software, systems, and integration).
  • Ensuring that dependencies on third party software (SDKs, APIs, Libraries, Integration documentation etc.) are checked into source control system or company- designated shared storage.
  • Participate fully in all phases of analysis, design, and implementation.
  • Analyse and document requirements using various technology tools and techniques.
  • Share responsibility for planning and delivering team activities.
  • Provide accurate estimates for the design, development , and implementation of a work program.
  • Provide commitments for timescales for the design, development, and implementation of a work program.
  • Professional approach to time, costs, quality of work, and deadlines.
  • Define and improve the way development works in line with IoT.nxt's values.
  • Proactively looking for ways to keep all time productive and will use non-client time for personal training, internal projects and administrative tasks.
  • Provides technical/specialist direction to team members. Manage problems and major Incidents
  • Frequently guides others on use of technology, providing clarity and direction on how technology can be used more simply and to IoT.nxt's advantage.
  • The ability to motivate and inspire others to achieve challenging goals .
  • Looks ahead at upcoming backlog across the department, and considers the planning/estimation and skills required, and works across department to address any skill gaps - including POC work if necessary.
  • Demonstrates that they fully understand any legislative requirements within their domain and understands best working practices to ensure compliance. Expectation that they would have relationships within relevant legal bodies.
  • Drives /demonstrates innovation within the department in accordance with IoT.nxt goals and objectives.

  • Capable of being parachuted into any initiative /project struggling technically to offer skills advice and to help the technical direction of the team back on track.
