Job Title / Reporting to:

The Project Accountant will report to the Head: PMO within the Programme Management Group (PMG). The role is based in Centurion, Pretoria and currently a hybrid role (office and work from home).

Job Purpose:

The Project Accountant position is accountable for managing and monitoring the overall financial matters of the PMG (Programme Management Group). The responsibility spans across multiple project portfolios, investigating variances, approving expenses, and ensuring that project billings are issued to customers, cashflow forecasting and projections tracked, and payments collected. The ideal candidate is also highly proficient in data and analytics. Able to influence forecasting or demand planning recommendations to Executive leadership in PMG based on data driven decisions.

Key Result Areas:  (Major Accountabilities)

  • Create project accounts in the accounting system, in collaboration or support to Finance Department.
  • Maintain project-related records, including contracts and cost change orders.
  • Authorize access to project accounts, in collaboration or support to Finance Department.
  • Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project-related accounts.
  • Review and approve supplier invoices related to a project.
  • Review and approve time sheets for work related to a project.
  • Review and approve overhead charges to be applied to a project.
  • Review account totals related to project assets and expenses.
  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management.
  • Confer with receivables staff regarding unpaid contract billings.
  • Report on project profitability to management. Manage revenue, costs, and margins across all projects within the PMG (Programme Management Group).
  • Report to management on any opportunities for additional billings. Improve processes to avoid revenue leakage on projects.
  • Report to management regarding the remaining funding available for projects (remaining Total Contract Value/Capex/Opex).
  • Create or approve all project-related billings to customers, in collaboration and support of Regional /Vertical Account Managers.
  • Investigate all project expenses not billed to customers.
  • Approve the write-off of any project-related billings that cannot be billed to or collected from customers.
  • Close out project accounts upon project completion.
  • Compile information for internal and external auditors, as required.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual project financials reports, as well as project financial forecasts.
  • Create, support and manage project budgets in collaboration with the Head of Portfolios, Project and Programme Managers.
  • Create annual and LRP (Long Range Plan) PMG cost centre budget.

Education, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting plus articles, or similar (i.e., Cost Accounting / Financial Accounting / Management Accounting etc).
  • CIMA qualification would be advantageous.
  • CA (SA) qualification would be advantageous.
  • Project Management qualification or equivalent would be advantageous.
  • 5 -8 years' experience as a Project Accountant.
  • Advanced knowledge in electronic accounting systems, such as SAP.
  • Advanced MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and BI (Business Intelligence) knowledge and skills.
  • Exceptional ability to prepare and mange project budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Analytical thinker with high attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-management and self-motivation.
  • Able to work to tight deadlines and under pressure.
